Challenge coins date back to World War I when they were used as a sign of affiliation for members of the armed forces. The small coins with the unit’s insignia imprinted on them were used as a form of identification and in some cases, a lifesaving token. Military members carried their coins at all times and pulled them out to “challenge” one another to display the memento at a moment’s notice.

The coins banded groups together by boosting morale during the war. The challenge coins are recognized as a symbol of hope, strength, and perseverance for military groups. Challenge coins are often used for special awards and in recognition of visits to other countries. We work with our military men and women to create coins for the United States Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Air Force, and Marines.

The custom challenge coin tradition has been adopted by both the public and private sector to reward, thank, encourage, inform, and educate. Sports organizations, government agencies, and even enthusiast groups use coins for a number of different functions. Challenge coins have even been created to celebrate special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, and weddings.
